Strong branding transforms complexity into connection.

By leading Solidarity Engineering’s 2023 rebrand, I helped translate Solidarity’s technical, field-based work into a story people could see themselves in— one that strengthened trust, participation, and revenue by 38%.

Programatic Rebrand

Engineers are high-impact players involved in a wide range of projects. Rather than separating each initiative, I reorganized Solidarity’s extensive project list into three clear program areas. This structure made budgeting more flexible, streamlined reporting, and made Solidarity’ work easier to communicate and understand.

Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)
& Basic Infrastructure

  • Solidarity’s WASH and infrastructure work spans from providing clean drinking water in emergencies to designing and constructing shelters. Working with communities, Solidarity builds solutions that meet immediate needs while supporting long-term stability.

    • Safe Water Access: From emergency water trucking to constructing and maintaining the largest shelter's water system.

    • Hygienic WASH Facilities: Installation and maintenance of:

      • Bathrooms & Toilets: from providing portable toilets to building permanent bathroom blocks.

      • Showers, laundry, handwashing sinks, and more.

    • Personal Hygiene Supplies:

      • Personal Hygiene: Soap, hand sanitizer, shampoo, and laundry detergent to help maintain cleanliness and health.

      • Menstrual Health: Distribution of menstrual pads, menstrual health kits, and resources to support women’s health.

      • Maternal & Newborn Support: Diapers, baby clothes, wipes, and postpartum supplies for mothers and newborns.

    • Sanitation Supplies:

      • Toilet paper

      • Cleaning supplies

      • Insect control measures

    • Shelter Construction: Building and supporting major shelters, including the largest NGO-constructed shelter in Mexico.

    • Drainage Systems: Reducing flooding and waterborne disease risks by managing stormwater and wastewater.

    • Shade Structures: Providing relief from harsh weather and creating safe communal spaces.

    • Solar Power Solutions: Installing solar power where electricity is scarce, creating safer and more sustainable environments.

    • Basic Supplies:

      • Extreme-Weather Items: Blankets, warm clothing, and tarps to protect against extreme weather.

      • Emergency Lighting: Flashlights and solar lanterns to increase safety in unlit areas.

  • Displacement often leaves children’s needs unmet. That’s why Solidarity creates spaces just for them. From playground construction to hands-on STEM classes, Solidarity works to center play even in the most challenging circumstances.

    • Safe Spaces to Play: From community play parks to backyard playground equipment, Solidarity designs and builds playgrounds.

    • STEM Activities: Solidarity conducts interactive STEM sessions, sparking curiosity and learning through fun, hands-on activities.

    • Basic Supplies:

      • Books

      • Educational materials

      • School supplies

      • Toys

      • Games

      • Stuffed animals and other comfort items

Play &
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)

  • Engineers love data. Solidarity turns complex information into data-driven reports that clearly illustrate the scale and urgency of the crises it addresses. This not only increases accountability, but ensures transparency.

    • Needs Assessments and Community Surveys: Gathering insights on the needs and experiences of the communities Solidarity serves.

    • Monitoring & Evaluation: Assessing the impact of Solidarity’s projects to ensure they are effective and meet community needs.

    • Evidence-Based Advocacy: Using data to influence partners, government agencies, and humanitarian organizations to increase support and resources for displaced communities.

External messaging

  • Social media

I crafted meaningful and visually cohesive content that upheld the dignity of the people we served and told the story of Solidarity’s work with care.

  • Email Marketing

I helped develop The Solidarity Scoop, Solidarity’s monthly newsletter, by creating a clear structure that allowed the organization to easily and cohesively update supporters on programs and upcoming initiatives.

  • Reporting

From annual reports to data-driven appeals, I turned complex information into clear, actionable stories that increased support.

Why Engineering?

In humanitarian work, questions often arise about the role of engineers. To address this, I developed the “Why Engineering” framework for Solidarity Engineering.

It explains how engineering goes beyond traditional health care, shaping the environments that impact well-being. In complex humanitarian settings, where conventional systems often fail, engineering provides practical solutions that respond to urgent crises, prevent disease, create safer spaces, and uphold human dignity.

Treat the source

  • Our environment directly impacts our health. Instead of responding to disease outbreaks, Solidarity’s services work to prevent disease before it starts.

Working alongside healthcare professionals allows problems to be tackled collaboratively. Medical professionals often treat the symptoms of disease. Engineers can treat the cause. Only together can they solve health-related problems and achieve our joint goal of reduced suffering.

A systems approach to complex problems

  • Engineers are wired to break down complex problems into parts and subsystems; this is known as a systems approach. Solidarity uses this systems approach to better understand and provide lifesaving aid in complex regions and crises.

Intersection of emergency response & develop

  • The reality of modern displacement is that, in many cases, displacement is both an immediate disaster and a potentially indefinite circumstance. We work at the intersection of development and emergency response, implementing emergency services in addition to long-term capital construction.
